By Sophia Lucero

The College of Engineering Library and the Department of Computer Science recently celebrated the future transfer to their new home by holding a "soft launch" and open house at the new building along Velasquez Street (in front of NIGS) last November 12, 2005.

Dubbed "A Walkthrough of the New Engineering Library and Computer Science Building," the program was graced by luminaries in the College and the University, as well as faculty, staff, and students. Companies in attendance were Accenture, Canon, Hewlett-Packard, and Innove Communications.

The Dean of Engineering, Dr. Rowena Cristina L. Guevara, gave the welcome address. This was followed by inspirational messages of UP President Dr. Emerlinda R. Roman and UP Diliman Chancellor Dr. Sergio S. Cao, who both expressed their continued support for the further development of science and engineering research through institutions such as the Engineering Library and the Department of Computer Science.

DCS Chair Dr. Cedric Angelo M. Festin officially launched the CS and Engineering Library Donors Program, led by the turnover of Php 207,000.00from Ms. Ma. Cristina Olpoc and Ms. Lourdes Macatulad, a sum gathered by CS alumni and friends from HP for the Department's conference room.

Finally, Head College Librarian Mrs. Yolanda C. Granda closed the program with words of gratitude towards everyone who made the vision of the New Building a reality.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony was then held for the Engineering Library Discussion Room, donated by the UP Engineering Radio Guild (UP ERG). Letters of intent to donate computers and equipment to the Department were also signed by Innove Communications and Accenture.

Around one hundred guests were treated to a "digital walkthrough" of the new building, courtesy of the UP Engineering Webteam (EWT). Afternoon snacks were also provided.

The National Anthem was led by UP staff chorale member Pelagio "Kuya Leng" Bengco. Master of Ceremonies for the day was Carlos Miguel Lasa, 4thyear CS student.
