UP CURSOR Honored as Premier Organization

By Michael Mansait

The UP Association of Computer Science Majors (UP CURSOR) was honored as the College of Engineering's Premier Organization during the awarding ceremonies of the 2006 Engineering Organization Excellence Award (EOEA), held last January 31 at the Engineering Theater.

UP CURSOR was selected by a panel of judges as the top organization out of the 30 recognized organizations in the College of Engineering. Last year's champion, the UP Engineering Radio Guild (UP ERG), took home second place while UP CIRCUIT landed third.

Other participants of the event were the UP Association of Civil Engineering Students (UP ACES), UP Circle of Industrial Engineering Majors (UP CIEM), and the UP Chemical Engineering Society (UP KEM).

The EOEA was launched in 2005 by the UP Alliance for Responsive Involvement and Student Empowerment (UP ARISE). The event aims to recognize accomplished organizations in the College who excel holistically through their academic and extracurricular programs and their service to the College, community, and society.

Organizations were judged in two parts. Prior to the awards night, event participants were asked to submit documentation of the organization's activities and achievements for the past year. Based on this, they were judged using various criteria which included the FOPC and Eng'g Week standings, academic and extra-curricular projects and individual & organizational honors received.

The second part was an interview portion which was held during the night itself, where judges interviewed the president of the organization along with another distinguished member. This year, UP CURSOR was represented on the stage by Carlos Miguel Lasa and Geomar Lubaton.

UP CURSOR was established in 1983 and is an active organization within and beyond the Department of Computer Science. Apart from the EOEA, they were able to rank 4th out of 80 organizations in the university-wide Freshman Orientation Program bidding while also placing 3rd in the recently held Engineering Week festivities.
