ALUMNI ENGINEERS
The UP Alumni Engineers was established in 1947 with Hermenegildo R. Reyes, CE’28, as prime-mover and first president, reelected up to 1950. The 1947 Board of Directors were all CE graduates: H.R. Reyes, Antonio Albert, Cesar H. Concio Sr., Isaias Fernando, Ephraim Gochangco, Andres O. Hizon, and Alejandro Melchor. The next two succeeding presidents were Rigoberto Atienza(CE’35), and Dominador Cepeda( CE’32). Of the 36 UPAE presidents since 1947, 19 had CE degrees.
Honrado R. Lopez(CE’35) was the UPAE President when the college celebrated its Golden Jubilee in 1960. Ricardo T, Quebral(CE’52) was president during the Diamond Jubilee Celebration in 1985. At that time, Dean Alfredo L. Juinio(CE’39) received the UP Engineering Diamond Jubilee Award.
Chato Calderon(CE’72) was the first lady president of the UPAE. Also a second generation president as her father, Quintin A. Calderon(CE’36) was UPAE president 1970-1972. Chato was the supervising engineer when the UP sundial along G. Apacible Street was constructed in 1972.
DISTINGUISHED CE ALUMNI
Politics
The first engineering alumnus elected as congressman was Florencio M. Moreno(CE’29) for the province of Romblon. Later came Felix Fuentebella(CE’36) for Camarines Norte, and Jose L. Lachica(CE’38) from Sorsogon. In the late sixties, Eulogio "Yoyong" Borres(CE’38) was elected Mayor of Cebu City. Pedro O. Valdez(CE’36) was a member of the Constitutional Convention. Victor E. Agbayani(CE’82) is currently the Governor of the Province of Pangasinan.
Lady Graduates
The first lady graduate of UP Engineering was Miss Lydia Monzon(CE’41). Then Nancy Lai-Reyes(CE’52), Zenny Guerrero(CE’54) and Fe Franco(CE’55).
Deans
The first two deans of the college, W.F. Colbert(1910-1911) and Laurence E. Griffin (1911-1912), were not civil engineers. It was the first permanent dean, Clarence G. Wrentmore(1912-1919) who was a civil engineer who had taught at Michigan University. Dean Edward R. Hyde(1927-1940) a civil engineering graduate of MIT taught at West Point before coming to Manila.
The first Filipino dean, Vidal A. Tan(1940-1949) was a CE who graduated from Cornell University. Dean Alfredo L. Juinio(1970-1979, CE’39 cum laude) was the first UPCE alumnus to become dean. He was followed by Dean Marino M. Mena(CE’56).
Writers
Among the engineering student writers who became members of the UP Writers Club were: Conrado S. Ramirez(CE’32); Antonio C. Cayanan(CE’32); Angel F. de Jesus(CE’33); Dom I. Ilio(CE’39) and Edward Lara(CE’51).
When UP transferred to Diliman in 1949, the engineering boys at the dorms put up as a gimmick a ragtag paper they called the "Diliman Daily" containing numerous news bits, jokes, etc. Totoy Dans, Cesar Buenaventura, Ponsing Padua and Nandy Sison were some of by-liners.
Public Works Secretaries
Among the UPCE alumni who became public works secretaries: Brigido R. Valencia(CE’35); Marciano Bautista(CE’36); David M. Consunji(CE’46); Alfredo L. Juinio(CE’39); Florelo Estuar(CE’59); and Gregorio Vigilar(CE’59).
UP Board of Regents
Among the UP CE alumni who became members of the UP Board of Regents were: Alejandro Melchor, Fernando E.V. Sison, Hermenigildo R. Reyes, Cesar A. Buenaventura and Ernesto G. Tabujara.
